jaz-mobi Project

Concord-based guitarist Steve Thomas celebrates the release of his latest CD "jaz-mobi Project" (Atwood Media).

In concert on Sunday, Sept. 26 at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center, 1276 Main St., West Concord at 4 p.m. Joining Thomas will be musicians featured on the CD: Dan Abreu, sax and EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument), Frank Basile, drums and Maggie Rizzi, bass, along with special guest Bob Ponte on Keyboards. Tickets at the door are $5. For information, call 508-361-2748.

The "jaz-mobi Project" is guitarist/composer Thomas' second CD as a leader. The CD displays the vast breadth and depth of Thomas' musical interests, experiences and vision in a collection of 12 pieces that vary in length and mood. Showcasing everything from nouveau- bop and blues, to juxtaposed world grooves, to cool-fused mash-ups, and textural sound paintings, "jaz-mobi Project" showcases Thomas' eclectic and contemporary style.

One of Thomas' great strengths, displayed to perfection here, is his ability to construct intriguing forms as well as artful melodies. Thomas is also able to blend the urgent interactions of live, high-energy studio sessions with a masterful compendium of samples, electronic synthesis and sound effects. There may be few musical artists working today who can balance old and new, digital and analog, live and synthetic in such a sure-handed fashion.

Garnining a 2004 Grammy listing with the "jaz-mobi Project," Thomas' unique contemporary style is resonating with critics and peers alike: "A really nice CD with some manifestations of Passport-itis... the thinking person's hyperpop-Jazz... comfortable with lots of pleasant surprises.
